Escuchado recién (en sesión de mezcla) sobre el Semillon 2022 “El 22 tiene más personalidad. Es como esa Narigona en la película de Almodóvar. Basta con la perfección y Botox personalidad bienvenida!

Overheard just now (in blending session) about the Semillon 2022 “The 22 has more personality. It’s like that Narigona (actress with big nose) in an Almodovar movie. Enough with the perfection and Botox personality rocks.

Premium event was in Spanish but my notes translated:

The Isidore Vineyard was planted in the late 1940´s. Let’s put the 40´s into perspective; more than a number, it is when women in Chile were given the vote. Beginning in 1934 in municipal elections— when the municipalities survived, they were given the presidential vote in 1949.

In these times Ernestina Cancino planted the vineyard. An ambitious independent young women she worked hard to rebuild farms around Sauzal after the earthquake of 1939. Later she decided she wanted to see things beyond the Maule (outside Chile). The catch, when women travelled abroad in the 1940´s they had to sign over their real estate holdings conditionally to a man just in case they did not return. A less than scrupulous cousin went to work to usurp her lands the day she left the country.

Over decades the vineyard changed hands many times — a story worthy of a soap opera. But year in year she was cultivated, harvested and wine made. We know all of this because one of our team: Julio Moraga remembers all of these times even planting the vineyard. He told the story at great length over an entire morning to a Guardian reporter who I never got to interview … … because Don Julio was more than enough material for the article.

Why do I tell you all this?

First: There are many such vineyards in Chile and we should get out and find them and study them not only with a scientific lens but also with a historical lens. We spend a great deal of time in researching technical questions like: why do old vines make such good wines? Perhaps we have it backwards? Perhaps they are old because they make good wine!

The second reason has to do with our protagonist: Ernestina Cancino— a woman far ahead of her time who somehow could see beyond the commonly accepted horizon.

I was asked in London a few weeks ago how it was that Garage [15 years ago] saw a future for these vines. How had we been able to see so far ahead. I said it was easy [quoting Newton] It was easy because we were standing on the shoulders of giants, giants like Ernestina Cancino and Julio Moraga.
