Bagual Vineyard
Caliboro - Maule Valley
Carignan, Garnacha & Mataro
2015 - Lot 66

Singular wine from small parcel of a historic Caliboro farm 2015 is a lot more powerful and seems to be aromatically dominated by Carignan.

Acidez titulable: 6,o g/l
pH: 3,38
Residual Sugar: 1,89 g/l
Alcohol:  13,5 % vol

Blend:
Carignan - 3 barrels
Garnacha - 2 barrels
Mataró  - 1 barrel

1588  bottles filled in Nov 2016

In a nutshell:

  • 1 of 11 wines we make from single parcels
  • Singular wine made from a small parcel with ancestral farming by hand and horse of the Secano Interior
  • Grower / partner:  Solar family
  • River´s edge, alluvial Bagual Vineyard is found on the banks of the Perquilauquen river. A river that (very unusual for Chile!) flows from the Coastal Mountains East towards the Andes passing through Caliboro bringing granitic silt with it. East of Caliboro it turns North and then West joining the Loncomilla and then the Maule river and on out to the Pacific.
  • The Perquilauquen is wide through this section like a narrow lake and this water body lends the fruit cooler conditions than neighboring Melosal or Loncomilla.
  • Naturally fermented with native yeasts in open top fermenters using punch-down technique
  • Barrel-aged over two winters in French Barrels (various cooperages, 2 + uses--  no new wood)
  • This wine was grown by ploughmen farmers in the Maule. It was farmed by hand and horse with traditional methods of dry-farming old vines with vines of Garnacha and Mataró in the field-blend.
  • It was fermented naturally in small tanks with open-tops. Caps were punched down by hand and pressing was strictly manual. The wine was aged in barrels over two winters— barrels of three or more uses.
  • Yeasts native (we add Bagual wine from previous vintage to a ‘pie de cuba’ primer)
  • No temp control (besides opening closing windows) open tank,
  • Pinch of sulfites after Malolactic that normally finishes a full 7 months after harvest with next summer´s heat. Another pinch before bottling.
  • This wine is a tribute to the resilience of the ploughmen farmers of the Maule who have been stewards of the vines of Caliboro since colonial times. The 66th wine we have bottled since 2001 it is thus labelled Lot # 66

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate # 239
Bagual Vineyard Carignan, Garnacha & Mataró Field-blend 2015 - Lot # 66 – 93 Pts
I was able to compare the 2015 Bagual Vineyard with the 2016, and the difference of character is notable. This 2015 is a lot more powerful and has a little more ripeness, while the 2016 is fresher and more aromatic. This seems to be aromatically dominated by Carignan, and the palate reveals some earthy rusticity I also often associate with the grape. However, 2015 seems to be a quite tannic year. Lot #66 was bottled into 1,588 bottles in November 2016.

Bagual Vineyard Carignan/Garnacha/Mataró Field Blend 2014 Lot #66 – 93 Pts

Bagual Vineyard Carignan/Garnacha/Mataró Field Blend 2014 Lot #56 – 94 Pts
This may come from what Derek Mossman calls a “scruffy vineyard”, but when it produces wines as good as this, who cares about aesthetics. It’s a classic Maule Field blend of Carignan, Garnacha and Mataró with lovely, wild herb and orange zest notes and fine, well-integrated tannins. 2o17-2o22

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate # 23o
Bagual Vineyard Maule Valley Carignan, Garnacha & Mataró Field-blend 2014  - Lot # 56 – 94 Pts
This is a Carignan, Garnacha and Mataró field blend marked lot #56 where the Carignan is approximately 75 years old and the Garnacha and Mataró were grafted on roots of País that was over 150 years old. It's perfumed, floral, aromatic, intoxicating, nuanced and harmonious, with the elegance and subtleness of a white wine. It has good grip, with very fine tannins and great acidity. 1,694 bottles were filled in November 2015.

Bagual Vineyard Maule Valley Carignan, Garnacha & Mataró 2013  - Lot # 46 – 92 Pts
(aged for two years in used French oak barrels; pH 3.34) Deep ruby. A wild, exotically perfumed bouquet evokes ripe dark berries, passion fruit and candied flowers, and a zesty mineral flourish builds in the glass. Appealingly sweet black raspberry, cherry and rose pastille flavors become livelier as the wine opens up. In a seamless, open-knit style, offering excellent finishing clarity and a long, gently tannic finish that echoes the floral note. Drink 2018 – 2023 Josh Raynolds

Wine Advocate Robert Parker , #222  Dec 2015
Bagual Vineyard Maule Valley Carignan, Garnacha & Mataró 2013  - Lot # 46 – 91 Pts
The 2013 Bagual Vineyard Lot #46 is a blend of Cariñena, Garnacha and Mataró (Monastrell or Mourvèdre) from the Bagaul Vineyard, located in Caliboro in the Maule Valley. It's a vineyard that had old Cariñena and they regrafted some of the vines to Garnacha and Monastrell. They harvest and ferment the grapes separately from these alluvial soils from dry farmed, ungrafted vines (a constant in their wines). A little closed and serious, it slowly develops some aromas of paprika and beef blood, wild berries and something earthy. The palate is medium-bodied, with very fine acidity, fine tannins and very good length. Like all of heir wines, the wine spends two winters in the winery, as they believe it stabilizes and focuses the wines. This has very good harmony and stuffing to age in bottle. They produce a little more than 4,000 bottles of this wine. Drink 2015 – 2021 Luis Gutierrez

Wine Advcate – Robert Parker , #213  Jun 2014
The 2011 Lot #34 Carignan from the Maule Valley is produced from the fruit of dry-farmed, head-pruned old vines. It is bright ruby-colored with a serious nose mixing tree bark aromas, red and black fruit, licorice and subtle spices. The Carignan is blended with some Grenache and Mataró. The palate is fluid with good acidity and medium body – pure, fresh, delicious Mediterranean wine. This is a great, elegant blend. 93 pts Drink now-2019

The 2010 Carignan (91%) – Grenache (9%) sports an intriguing nose of exotic spices, black plum, black cherry, underbrush, and earthy minerals. This is followed by a plush, succulent, pleasure-bent wine that is more structured than its peers. Give it 5-6 years to reveal its full potential and drink it from 2016 to 2025

The 2008 Lot #17 Old Vine Carignan – 92 pts Parker
Field Blend includes unknown amounts of Cabernet Franc and Malbec sourced from a 65-year-old parcel and aged in neutral oak. Purple in color with a captivating nose of exotic spices, incense, wild berries, and floral notes, in the glass it opens to reveal a complex, rich, layered wine packed into a medium- bodied frame. Give it 5-6 years to reveal its full potential and drink it from 2016 to 2023.

Portezuelo Vineyard
Itata Valley
Carignan, Field-blend
2015 - Lot 68

"2015 was a tannic year, and the 2015 Portezuelo Vineyard manages to keep its poise. This is always very balsamic, and in this vintage, it feels super varietal, with the tree bark-like rusticity of the Cariñena and a slightly dusty personality. After some time in the glass, it takes off with lots of aromatic herbs and flowers." – LG

Carignan from Itata with notes of Cinsault  Earthy with a touch more funk and or jazz

Field-blend aprox:
Carignan - 7 barrels
Cinsault  - 1 barrel

Bottles filled : 2450 in Dic 2016

Acidez titulable: 5,7 g/l
pH: 3,5
Residual Sugar: 2,16 g/l
Alcohol:  13,7 % vol

This wine was grown by a small farmer in Itata. It was farmed by hand and horse with traditional methods of dry-farming old vines with vines of Cinsault in the field-blend.

It was fermented naturally in small tanks with open-tops. Caps were punched down by hand and pressing was strictly manual. The wine was aged in barrels over two winters— barrels of two or more uses.

This wine is a tribute to the resilience of the ploughmen farmers of the Secano Interior who have been stewards of the vines since colonial times. Portezuelo was the site of the first winery in Chile. The 68th wine we have bottled since 2001 it is thus labelled Lot # 68.

In a Nutshell

  • Singular wine made from a small parcel with ancestral farming by hand and horse of the Secano Costero
  • Naturally fermented with native yeasts in open top fermenters using punch-down
  • Barrel-aged two winters in French Barrels (various cooperages, 2 + uses-- no new wood)
  • Cinsault is an age-old variety in Itata referred to as

Características de los viñedos:

Carignan & Cinsault form early 1940s

´

Elaboración:

  • Ancestral farming by hand and horse
  • Naturally fermented with native yeasts
  • Open top fermenters. Caps were punched down by hand. Pressing manual.
  • This parcel ferments a little warmer than the others 27-28 whereas Truqui does not climb so high
  • Aged in barrels over two winters— barrels third use or more.
  • Yeasts native (we add Portezuelo wine from previous vintage to a pie de cuba)
  • No temp control (besides opening closing windows) open tank, no nada
  • Pinch of sulfites after Malolactic that generally does finish before 1st Winter due to more heat in the tank finishing

Crianza:

  • Aged in barrels over two winters— barrels third use or more.
  • various cooperages (Sylvain, Berger, Nadalie – Alliers Noisette toast, and some Burgundy barrel

This is always very balsamic, and in this vintage, it feels super varietal, with the tree bark-like rusticity of the Cariñena and a slightly dusty personality. After some time in the glass, it takes off with lots of aromatic herbs and even flowers. This is lot number 68. 2,450 bottles were filled in December 2016. They didn't manage to produce this wine in the rainy 2016 vintage, so we'll have to wait for 2017 and 2018.

Portezuelo Vineyard Itata Valley Carignan, Field-blend 2014  - Lot # 58 – 93 Pts
The 2014 Portezuelo Vineyard, a Cariñena field blend planted in the early 1940s with some Cinsault from the Lavin family in Itata. The vineyard is on the initial slopes of the Coastal Range and enjoys shade early in the afternoon due to its exposure facing east. It compensated for the relative warmer temperatures from Portezuelo. Some people dismiss it because it's a warm place, but it really keeps the freshness. It's more Mediterranean with notes of dried herbs and spices, quite balsamic. The palate has the austerity and tastiness of the granite. 2,170 bottles were filled in December 2015. Portezuelo Vineyard D.O. Itata Valley Carignan, Field-blend 2013  - Lot # 48 – 92 Pts
As most of the Garage wines from the south, this is a Cariñena field blend with some Cinsault. The nose shows some wild herbs, flowers, spices and something earthy. There is less acidity in this wine from Itata than in most of the other examples from Maule; the wine feels fleshy and juicy, with very fine tannins and some grip. More accessible for those that might not want citric acidity in their reds. This is the first Garage Wine release from Itata. Some 3,700 bottles produced.  Drink 2015 – 2021 Luis Gutierrez

Bagual Vineyard
Caliboro - Maule Valley
Garnacha Field-blend
2o15 - Lot 69

“Rich and layered red with plum and berries. Layered and juicy with lots of fruit and ripe tannins. Finishes sappy, smooth and extremely long, displaying harmonious tannins and lingering candied lavender” -JR

singular Garnacha from small parcel of historic Caliboro farm

Alcohol: 14,9 (real)
pH  3,32
Acidez:  6,15
Azúcar residual: 2,44

7 Barrels Garnacha,
1717 bottles filled in Dic of 2016

In a Nutshell:

  • 1 of 11 wines we make from single parcels
  • Grower / partner Solar family
  • Alluvial like the Bagual Vineyard where the Carignan blend hails from but a separate parcel further from the banks of the Perquilauquen river. This vineyard has two deep esteros on each side that lend it terrific drainage.
  • Near the banks of the Perquilauquen river. A river that (very unusual for Chile!) flows from the Coastal Mountains East towards the Andes passing through Caliboro bringing granitic silt with it. East of Caliboro it turns North and then West joining the Loncomilla and then the Maule river and on out to the Pacific.
  • The Perquilauquen is wide through this section like a narrow lake and this water body lends the fruit cooler conditions than neighboring Melosal or Loncomilla.

the Vineyard:

  • Weatherwise rain continued long into Spring and cultivating / ploughing was done more than a month later than ususal in October. Leaves were significantly more autumnal when fruit was picked. Tannins in 2o15 are more than a little bit firmer than normal and the wines more dense. We like vintage variance to show through in the wines. That said we hope people hold on to wines in accordance with said vintage variance.
  • In a retrospective tasting of various vintages lately 2015 came to be called the year of the grip. All of the parcels will take longer to come into their own. In 2o15 we began a our transition from limited experiments with whole stems in fermentation lagars to a broader production using this technique-- less pisoneo more raqui.
  • Whilst 2015 should be the year to taste this change, we think many will see 2016 as the watershed year, because 2015 is just too big to taste the difference yet. 2015 is a year to release later and a year to hold on to more bottles for late-release!

Wine-making:

  • Ancestral farming by hand and horse
  • Naturally fermented with native yeasts
  • Open top fermenters. Caps were punched down by hand. Pressing manual.
  • Aged in barrels over two winters— barrels third use or more.
  • Yeasts native (we add Bagual Garnacha wine from previous vintage to a pie de cuba and then inoculate the can with its own native yeasts.)
  • No temp control (besides opening closing windows) open tank, no nada
  • Pinch of sulfites after Malolactic that normally finishes a full 6-7 months after harvest with next summer´s heat

Denominación de Origen: Bagual / Caliboro / Maule Valley    (Secano Interior)

Tipo:  A brick

The 2015 Bagual Vineyard Garnacha Field Blend shows the heat of the vintage. I think these grapes from Caliboro tend to show quite ripe in warm years, and this is not an exception. It has the Caliboro firm tannins, and I feel this wine might benefit from some more time in bottle.

Bagual Vineyard Maule Valley Garnacha Field-blend 2014  - Lot # 59 – 92 Pts
The 2014 Bagual Vineyard Garnacha Field Blend uses fruit from Caliboro in Maule in partnership with the Solar family. The Carignan, Garnacha and Mataró field blend is near the banks of the Perquilauquen river, a river that, very unusual for Chile, flows from the Coastal Mountains east towards the Andes, passing through Caliboro, bringing granitic silt with it. East of Caliboro, it turns north and then west joining the Loncomilla and then the Maule river and on out to the Pacific. This is 14.9% alcohol with an incredible pH of 3.08 and 6.38 grams of acidity. As all the single vineyard bottlings, it matured in well-seasoned French oak barrels over two winters. It's riper and headier, with a little more body from the Syrah. Very tasty and with a long, supple finish. None of these wines show any oak whatsoever. 2,222 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2015.

(Aged in neutral French oak barrels for two years; pH 3.27) Brilliant ruby-red. Bagual Vineyard Maule Valley Garnacha Field-blend 2013  - Lot # 49 – 91 Pts
The 2013 Lot #49 Bagual Vineyard Garnacha Field Blend is composed of 11 barrels of Garnacha and one of Syrah. The grapes are harvested from the Bagual Vineyard in Caliboro, in the Maule, where they regrafted some old plants to Garnacha' in 2013 they bottled a varietal Garnacha for the first time. Spicy, floral and subtle, it has a dark ruby color, darker than most Garnachas, a little earthy and organic. The palate is sinewy, with nice acidity and the fine tannins of the Garnacha, perfectly integrated oak and a very tasty finish. Some 3,800 bottles produced.

Truquilemu Vineyard
Empedrado - Maule Valley
Carignan Field-blend
2015 - Lot 67

"Truquilemu Vineyard reveals the wild and somewhat rustic character of the Carignan—a little earthy, with a touch of smoked meat. It's very tasty and has the granite texture on the palate. This year they started using some stems in the vinification." – LG

Carignan - 16 barrels
Mataró  - 1 barrel

5230 bottles filled  Dic 2017

Acidez titulable: 6,75 g/l
pH: 3,28
Residual Sugar: 2,79 g/l
Alcohol:  14,3 % vol
S02 8,4

In a Nutshell

  • 1 of 11 wines we make from single parcels
  • Grower / partner Orellana family
  • Ancestral farming cultivating vineyard by hand and horse
  • Barrel aged over two Winters
  • Truquilemu is perhaps the freshest corner of The Maule secano where reds just manage to ripen.
  • Truquilemu Vineyard is found on the Coastal Range of mountains (much older and slower to cool than the Andes) Soils are granitic and sub-soils have cracked granite that allow roots to get deep into cracks.

This wine was grown by a small farmer in the Maule. It was farmed by hand and horse with traditional methods of dry-farming 70+ year old vines with vines.

It was fermented naturally in small tanks with open-tops. Caps were punched down by hand and pressing was strictly manual. The wine was aged in barrels over two winters— barrels of three or more uses.

This wine is a tribute to the resilience of the ploughmen farmers of the Maule who have been stewards of the vines  since colonial times. The 67th wine we have produced since 2001 it is thus labelled Lot # 67

the Vintage:

- A long and rainy Spring journey into Summer and then a short, hot Summer. Ploughing was done much later than usual. Tannins in 2o15 like Secano Maulino in general were a little bit firmer than normal especially the Garnacha and the wines are dense. Shorter season of heat: concentration and alcohol. Firm tannins. (Alc 2018 <13 alc vs 2015 > 14 with same pH and maturity)

Denominación de Origen: Truquilemu / Empedrado / Maule Valley    (Secano Interior)

Color: Yes

Tipo:  Understated and layered-- driven by florality & finesse

Tipo de uva: Carignan with smidgens of Mataró and Pais in the field-blend

the Vineyard:

It is hard to imagine someone having the patience (and a financial advisor!) willing to plant a red vineyard in this part of Empedrado. It is simply so cool most years. It must have taken forever for these vineyards to have come into their own. Thank god someone had the foresight to be patient all those years ago whilst the vineyard could grow old. (Question: if golf where invented today, how many holes would it have?)

the Making:

  • Ancestral farming by hand and horse
  • Naturally fermented with native yeasts
  • Open top fermenters. Caps were punched down by hand. Pressing manual.
  • Small portion was made with whole stems stomped with clean feet—this part was glorious and have done more bin experiments ever since.
  • Aged in barrels over two winters— barrels third use or more.
  • Yeasts native (we add Truquilemu wine from previous vintage to a pie de cuba)
  • No temp control (besides opening closing windows) open tank, no nada
  • Pinch of sulfites after Malolactic that normally finishes a full 7 months after harvest with next summer´s heat the following January.

Effect of whole stems well-established in this wine. We think there is a bit of a before and after.

Crianza:

  • Aged in barrels over two winters— barrels third use or more.
  • various cooperages (Sylvain, Berger, Nadalie – Alliers Noisette toast, and some Burgundy barrels)

The Carignan with smidgens of Mataró and País in the field blend bottled as 2014 Truquilemu Vineyard comes from an old dry-farmed vineyard belonging to the Orellana family in the cooler Empedrado zone in Maule. Mossman describes this as "Understated and layered—driven by florality & finesse." The wines never have any impact from the élevage and tend to have moderate alcohol and very good acidity and freshness. This is no exception. It has incredible freshness with notes of blood orange peel and wild herbs—floral, insinuating, harmonious and elegant. The palate is elegant and shows vibrant acidity, is super balanced and incredibly tasty. This is very much like the Vigno. 6,428 bottles were filled from 21 barrels of Cariñena and one of Mataró (Monastrell) in November 2015. In fact, they select a number of these barrels to make their Vigno bottling. Drink 2017-2025 Luis Gutierrez

There were 19 barrels of the 2013 Truquilemu Vineyard Lot #47, which is from the Empedrado zone in the Maule Valley. This is closer to the coast full of granitic soils with some layered parts, kind of schists, which allow the roots to go deep. The nose is floral, elegant and subtle, a little closed at first, becoming deeper and more nuanced with time in the glass. The palate shows great, citric freshness with a thread of fine acidity going through its backbone. This is mostly Cariñena mixed in the field with other varieties picked and fermented together, but the Cariñena represents more than 85% of the blend in the wine. It has character, notes of the earth and also those violets only the best Cariñena can provide. Plain great, with a long life ahead. I had the chance to visit the vineyard later on and it's one of those places that when you see them, you understand IT HAS to produce great wine. And in a fresh vintage like 2013, it certainly does.

The 2012 Lot #39 Carignan Garnacha Mataró Field Blend is from the Truquilemu Vineyard in Empedrado, in the Maule Valley, a zone closer to the coast. This is the older sibling of Lot #47 from 2013, and feels riper, headier, with notes of plums among those decayed violets, earth and tree bark, rustically elegant. The palate is medium-bodied with the signature high acidity of the Cariñena; all these wines have unbelievably low pH, but here the soils and proximity to the sea makes them higher in freshness and acidity. 3,500 bottles produced.  92 pts Drink now-2019

Pirque Vineyard
Maipo Valley
Cabernet Franc
2015 - Lot 70

“A very refined cabernet franc with incense, rose petal and berry character. Medium body, fine tannins and a clean finish.” - JS

Alcohol: 13,8
pH  3,6
Acidez:  5,18
Azúcar residual: 2,17

11 barrels Cabernet Franc

3060 bottles filled.

In a nutshell:
- Mountain grown in the Maipo in Pirque aprox 7oo mts
- Vineyard planted in the 1980´s

The Vintage
In a retrospective tasting of various vintages lately 2015 came to be called the year of the grip in the Maule wines but here from Maipo it is more restrained. It was warmer than most years but healthy and dry.

Denominación de Origen: Pirque - Maipo Valley   (Maipo Alto / Maipo Andes)

Tipo: “Elegant blue-fruited gent with muscles inside a well-cut jacket.”

Tipo de uva: Pure Cab Franc

Características de los viñedos: Ancient riverbed flows beneath the vineyard. Rio Clarillo once had two tributaries that have since dried up. Soil studies with Pedro Parra revealed the river´s path and the Franc from these bending sections of the old river are especially interesting.  Altitude allows a freshness that works very well with this variety when it is not overly extracted allowing elegant and distinct flavour profile of blue fruit and minty leaf.

Elaboración:

  • Naturally fermented with native yeasts
  • Open top fermenters. Caps were punched down by hand.
  • Aged in barrels over two winters— barrels third use.
  • Yeasts native (we add wine from previous vintage to a pie de cuba)
  • No temp control (besides opening closing windows) open tank, no nada
  • Pinch of sulfites after malolactic that finishes before winter begins.

Crianza:

  • Aged in barrels over two winters— barrels third use from cooperages Sylvain, Berger, Nadalie special softer Noisette toast.

¿Cuántos lotes hay de este vino?

Lot made from a parcel in Pirque of pure Cab Franc. We do not believe in monkey business nor tweaking with other bits we might have in bodega from other parcels. We blend the various barrels, racked separately throughout crianza, 3 or 4 days before bottling.

When we find a barrel that talks too loud or marks the blend too much we put it aside for a second wine made solera style called: Perverso.

The 7oth wine we have bottled produced since 2001 it is marked Lot # 7o

“The GWCo Cabernet Franc has that note of freshness I find in some of the best high-altitude vineyards, with some blue fruit aromas, something minty, leafy, herbal, balsamic, very fresh and a little wild. This is a vineyard at some 700 meters altitude. The palate is also very fresh, medium-bodied with very fine tannins, a fine texture and is very elegant.” — Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate # 222

“Incredible nose of crushed raspberries and flowers. Bay leaf too. Pureness of fruit here. Full body, round and silky tannins and a beautiful freshness and length. A fabulous wine. About 14 barrels made. Try to find it.”  — James Suckling

Pirque Vineyard Maipo Valley Cab Franc 2013  - Lot # 70 – 93 Pts
The Maipo Cabernet Franc 2015 Pirque Vineyard is open and expressive and hitting on all cylinders. It feels very floral next to the 2016, which is shyer. It has polished, round tannins and feels quite gentle. Drink 2018-2o24 Luis Gutierrez

Pirque Vineyard Maipo Valley Cab Franc 2014  - Lot # 60 – 94 Pts
Patricio Tapia

Pirque Vineyard Maipo Valley Cab Franc 2013  - Lot # 60 – 93 Pts
There is also a Cabernet Franc from Pirque labeled as 2014 Pirque Vineyard, which was cropped from vines planted in the 1980s and grown at 700 meters altitude. They always provide amusing descriptions of their wines, and this one was described as "Elegant blue-fruited gent with muscles inside a well cut jacket." The usual modus operandi was followed once more, with native fermentation in open top fermenters with punching down by hand and two winters in used barrels. It has herbal aromas, spicier notes and especially more character than the majority of Cabernet Sauvignon from Maipo. It is also very spicy in the palate with some "morrón" pepper nuances. Very tasty, almost salty. 2,464 bottles were filled in November 2015. Drink 2017-2o27 Luis Gutierrez

Pirque Vineyard Maipo Valley Cab Franc 2014  - Lot # 60 – 92 Pts
If you want to taste the difference between Maipo and Maule, compare this Cabernet Franc with the Lot #52 release. This is denser, darker and more concentrated with plush fruit flavours and sweet cassis and dark berry fruit complemented by vanilla oak. 2018-24

Pirque Vineyard Maipo Valley Cab Franc 2013  - Lot # 50 – 93 Pts
The 2013 Lot #50 Cabernet Franc is sourced, like all the lots of Cabernet Franc, from the Pirque Vineyard in Maipo, and in this vintage the vineyard is shown on the label (well, it's actually painted on the bottle!). It has that note of freshness I find in some of the best high-altitude vineyards, with some blue fruit aromas, something minty, leafy, herbal, balsamic, very fresh and a little wild. This is a vineyard at some 700 meters altitude. The palate is also very fresh, medium-bodied with very fine tannins, a fine texture and is very elegant. I tasted the 2009 for context and aging potential, and even when they used more oak at the time, the wine is aging very nicely, with some rusticity. 5,513 bottles were filled. Drink 2017-2o27 Luis Gutierrez

Descorchados 2014 Ranked Best Cab Franc of Chile?
Pirque Vineyard Maipo Valley Cab Franc 2011  - Lot # 36 – 93 Pts
- Patricio Tapia

Decanter Magazine UK – Nov 2015 Top 6 Cabernet Franc from South America ?
Garage Wine CO. Lot # 42 vintage 2012 Oak seems dominant when first opened but look beyond and you will see thick layers of ripse, voluptuous fruit behind. This is a generous Cab franc, yet very well balanced. 17,5 pts Drink 2015 - 2021 Alc 14%

GWCo. Cabernet Franc Lot # 28 – 2010 - 94 pts - James Suckling (Best Cab Franc of Chile)
Fresh herb on the nose with thyme undertones. Dark fruits too. Full body plus a solid backbone of fruit and a long and intense finish. Wonderful tannin tension. Serious structure. Drink now or hold.

GWCo. Cabernet Franc Lot # 36 - 2011 ?- 91 pts - James Suckling
A fascinating red with crushed berries and flowers. Full body, juicy tannins and a flavorful finish. Not what you expect from a cabernet franc from new world. More Loire-like. This is all handmade with natural yeasts. Grown on Andes foothills. Drink now.

GWCo CAB FRANC VALLE DE MAIPO LOT #42 2012?- 92 pts James Suckling .com
A juicy and ripe style with lots of plum and light prune character. Full body, round tannins and a bright finish. Drink or hold.

Wine Advocate – Robert Parker , #213 Jun 2014
Lot #36 Cabernet Franc – 2011 92 pts (Best result for Cab Franc from Chile)
Lot 36 is from a vineyard at 700 meters altitude in the Pirque region in the Alto Maipo, a place already well-known for Cabernet. This wine has a clean aroma of raspberry leaf and red fruits along with balsamic notes and great purity. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh, clean and pure, with a bitter note that lingers in your mouth. Drink now-2017.

Wine Advocate – Robert Parker , #204 Dec 2012 ?
Lot 28 Cabernet Franc 2010 -  92 pts (Best Cab Franc from Chile)
Lot 28 comes from 25+- year-old vines at 800 meters altitude and spends two winters in oak. It has a very convincing, fresh, expressive bouquet with pure brambly, briary black fruit and freshly tilled soil. The palate is medium- bodied with crisp black cherry and blueberry fruit on the entry. The tannins are fine and edgy, while the finish is beautifully composed and contains Margaux- like femininity. This is extremely well-crafted Cabernet Franc, surfeit with personality. Drink now-2017.

GWCo Lot # 36 Cab Franc – 2011
Bright ruby. Intense, spice-accented aromas of cherry, redcurrant and violet, with smoke and mineral topnotes. Juicy and precise on the palate, offering energetic red fruit flavors that take on weight with air. Finishes smoky, spicy and very long, with slow- building tannins and resonating florality. 91 Steve Tanzer 91   -  Josh Raynolds - Steve Tanzer Int’l Wine Cellar

Pictures of harvest taken over the past few years:

Yesterday we sat down to blend Maipo Cabs.

Just like many sessions we have had over the years tasting barrel by barrel. 2018 is a crackerjack of a vintage to be sure. We were happy with the wines and like we do we pulled a couple of barrels back for our solera programme because we thought they spoke to loud instead of harmonising with the rest. As the session came to a close Alvaro asked what Lot number these wines would be? “Lot 100 & Lot 101” I said.

There was a pause as we all realised it was a bit of a milestone.

It has been a long and winding road since 2003 when we began in the Garage. We owe a great deal of thanks to so many of you out there for putting up with us all these years. You allowed us to do what we do they way we like to do it through good times and bad—including an earthquake, bushfires, and this latest invisible mucker.

These lots will not be on the shelf for a long time, but perhaps mentioning them here might give us all pause to think of sharing better times ahead when we can raise a centenary lot of GWCo! #gwcowinery #gwcoharvest2018 #movichile #chileanwines

We had reinforcements come to help pick for our clients and one group we Haitian immigrants recently arrived in Chile. Dressed for Winter in the heat, and singing bluesy ballads they helped get the fruit in before a big rain— be sure to turn the volume up.
