In a Nutshell: 

  • 1 of 11 wines we make from single parcels
  • Grower / partner Orellana family
  • Ancestral farming cultivating vineyard by hand and horse
  • Barrel aged over two Winters
  • Truquilemu is perhaps the freshest corner of The Maule secano where reds just manage to ripen.
  • Truquilemu Vineyard is found on the Coastal Range of mountains (much older and slower to cool than the Andes) Soils are granitic and sub-soils have cracked granite that allow roots to get deep into cracks.

This wine was grown by a small farmer in the Maule. It was farmed by hand and horse with traditional methods of dry-farming 70+ year old vines with vines.

It was fermented naturally in small tanks with open-tops. Caps were punched down by hand and pressing was strictly manual. The wine was aged in barrels over two winters— barrels of three or more uses.

This wine is a tribute to the resilience of the ploughmen farmers of the Maule who have been stewards of the vines  since colonial times. The 57th wine we have produced since 2001 it is thus labelled Lot # 57

Spice- and mineral-accented aromas of red and blue fruit joined by slowly emerging violet and rhubarb notes. Sappy and concentrated but lithe as well, offering energetic black raspberry, spice-cake and floral pastille flavors and a bracing, refreshingly bitter suggestion of blood orange that adds bite to the back half. Finishes smooth, sweet and extremely long, with resonating floral and spice notes and supple tannins adding shape and gentle grip—Josh Raynolds

The Carignan with smidgens of Mataró and País in the field blend bottled as 2014 Truquilemu Vineyard comes from an old dry-farmed vineyard belonging to the Orellana family in the cooler Empedrado zone in Maule. Mossman describes this as "Understated and layered—driven by florality & finesse." The wines never have any impact from the élevage and tend to have moderate alcohol and very good acidity and freshness. This is no exception. It has incredible freshness with notes of blood orange peel and wild herbs—floral, insinuating, harmonious and elegant. The palate is elegant and shows vibrant acidity, is super balanced and incredibly tasty. This is very much like the Vigno. 6,428 bottles were filled from 21 barrels of Cariñena and one of Mataró (Monastrell) in November 2015. There were 19 barrels of the 2013 Truquilemu Vineyard Lot #47, which is from the Empedrado zone in the Maule Valley. This is closer to the coast full of granitic soils with some layered parts, kind of schists, which allow the roots to go deep. The nose is floral, elegant and subtle, a little closed at first, becoming deeper and more nuanced with time in the glass. The palate shows great, citric freshness with a thread of fine acidity going through its backbone. This is mostly Cariñena mixed in the field with other varieties picked and fermented together, but the Cariñena represents more than 85% of the blend in the wine. It has character, notes of the earth and also those violets only the best Cariñena can provide. Plain great, with a long life ahead. I had the chance to visit the vineyard later on and it's one of those places that when you see them, you understand IT HAS to produce great wine. And in a fresh vintage like 2013, it certainly does. Spice- and mineral-accented aromas of red and blue fruit liqueur, incense and cola are joined by slowly emerging violet and rhubarb notes. Descorchados nota sobre Truquilemu Vineyard
Precisamente en viñedos del secano del Maule se origina Lot # 47 Truquilemu Vineyard 2013. Se trata de un carignan de viejas parras en una zona muy cercana a la costa, sobre suelos graníticos. Esta es la tercera versión de este vino, con una producción de 6.129 botellas, es la más grande que Garage hace para su catálogo. Este Lot se siente vivo, rico en frutas rojas y notas florales, recio en textura, ideal para embutidos del Maule. Otro de sus carignan es Vigno (parte del grupo Vignadores de Carignan) que viene de Empedra- do, una de las zonas más frescas del secano costero del Maule. También se trata de parras muy viejas, sin irrigación artificial. Este vino, como todos los tintos de Garage en la línea Lot y en Vigno, se cría por “dos inviernos” en barricas, las más nuevas de tres años de uso. Se trata de carignanes de viejas parras en una zona muy cercana a la costa, sobre suelos graníticos. Este vino, como todos los tintos de Garage en la línea Lot y en Vigno, se cría por “dos inviernos” en barricas, las más nuevas de tres años de uso. “Cuando vas a comprar vinos por la zona, los viejos te dicen que el vino que lleva dos inviernos de crianza es el mejor” –dice Mossman. El resultado es el tinto clásico que se necesita para refrescar una tarde de asado con los amigos. Su acidez es intensa, pero también su lado terroso y su textura punzante.

The 2012 Lot #39 Carignan Garnacha Mataró Field Blend is from the Truquilemu Vineyard in Empedrado, in the Maule Valley, a zone closer to the coast. This is the older sibling of Lot #47 from 2013, and feels riper, headier, with notes of plums among those decayed violets, earth and tree bark, rustically elegant. The palate is medium-bodied with the signature high acidity of the Cariñena; all these wines have unbelievably low pH, but here the soils and proximity to the sea makes them higher in freshness and acidity. 3,500 bottles produced.  92 pts Drink now-2019

Carignan - 8 barrels

This wine was grown by a small farmer in Itata. It was farmed by hand and horse with traditional methods of dry-farming old vines with vines of Cinsault in the field-blend.

It was fermented naturally in small tanks with open-tops. Caps were punched down by hand and pressing was strictly manual. The wine was aged in barrels over two winters— barrels of two or more uses.

This wine is a tribute to the resilience of the ploughmen farmers of the Secano Interior who have been stewards of the vines since colonial times. Portezuelo was the site of the first winery in Chile. The 58th wine we have bottled since 2001 it is thus labelled Lot # 58.

The 2014 Portezuelo Vineyard, a Cariñena field blend planted in the early 1940s with some Cinsault from the Lavin family in Itata. The vineyard is on the initial slopes of the Coastal Range and enjoys shade early in the afternoon due to its exposure facing east. It compensated for the relative warmer temperatures from Portezuelo. Some people dismiss it because it's a warm place, but it really keeps the freshness. It's more Mediterranean with notes of dried herbs and spices, quite balsamic. The palate has the austerity and tastiness of the granite. 2,170 bottles were filled in December 2015. As most of the Garage wines from the south, this is a Cariñena field blend with some Cinsault. The nose shows some wild herbs, flowers, spices and something earthy. There is less acidity in this wine from Itata than in most of the other examples from Maule; the wine feels fleshy and juicy, with very fine tannins and some grip. In a Nutshell:

  • barrel aged over two winters in French Barrels of various cooperages with two or more uses--  no new wood) 

The Vintage:

- A cooler cloudy Spring. Frost nearby did not affect San Juan as cold air sinks down the value—ironically the higher vineyards suffer less from frost. Tannins in high Maipo in 2o14 were softer and more accessible-- plush.

The Vineyard:

Classic second terrace of the Maipo River like Puente Alto but much higher into the gorge of the Cajon de Maipo in San Juan de Pirque at 946 metres. Round stones in alluvial soils combined with altitude make for a fresh wine with restrained fine tannins. 

Winemaking:

  • Naturally fermented with native yeasts
  • Open top fermenters. Caps were punched down by hand.
  • Aged in barrels over two winters— barrels third use.
  • Yeasts native (we add wine from previous vintage to a pie de cuba)
  • No temp control (besides opening closing windows) open tank,
  • Pinch of sulfites after malolactic that finishes before winter begins.

Barrel Ageing:

  • Aged in barrels over two winters— barrels third use from cooperages Sylvain, Berger, Nadalie.

The 2014 San Juan de Pirque Vineyard is a blend of 14 barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon and one single barrel of Cabernet Franc from their Pirque vineyard in Maipo at 946 meters altitude. It follows the general approach here and was naturally fermented with native yeasts in open top fermenters with the caps punched down by hand. It aged in third use barrels over two winters. It has some sweet sensations in the nose, a little lactic hint, with herbs and spices, very Maipo, with the stones but without the mint. 4,477 bottles were filled in November 2015. Garage is generally associated with the Secano Interior, but makes some of its best wines with Maipo grapes. This is a cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon with 3% Cabernet Franc, grown at a comparatively elevated 942 metres, and it’s grassy, refreshing and refined with highly polished tannins. 2018-25

The 2013 Lot #51 Cabernet Sauvignon is blended with a little Cabernet Franc (15 to 16 barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon and one of Cabernet Franc), and is sourced from the San Juan de Pirque Vineyard. Most of the wines ferment in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts (some small lots are done in plastic bins) and then age in used barrels. There is good herbal freshness, ripe berries, earth, iron and a touch of blood. The tannins are very fine and there is a nice thread of acidity, with good balance. This vineyard is the second terrace of the Maipo river, with the classical rolling stones of Puente Alto, at almost 1,000 meters altitude. The bottles now show a round stamp saying 'Mountain Grown'. The 2009 tasted together with this shows classical notes of bottle evolution, layered with developed notes of cigar box, tobacco and graphite. The 2012 Lot #44 Cabernet Sauvignon from Alto Maipo shows ripe aromas of wild berries, notes of tobacco leaf and some cracked peppercorns. The palate is medium-bodied with the signature fresh acidity I find as a constant in the Garage Wine Co. bottlings, and very fine, polished and refined tannins. This is serious, fresh Cabernet from Maipo. Around 4,000 bottles were produced. Drink now-2019

Fermentado con levaduras nativas y con cero madera nueva, esto es un vino que se siente puro y frutal, como un jugo de cerezas negras condimentado con hierba, una deliciosa sensación para un vino cristalino. Vivid ruby. Sexy, highly perfumed bouquet of fresh red berries, cherry pit, potpourri and mocha, with hints of black pepper and anise adding complexity. Spicy and expansive in the mouth, offering lively cherry and raspberry flavors and intense floral character. Silky tannins add grip and shape to the long, sappy finish. The Vineyard:

  • Terrace of alluvial soils above the Archibueno River
  • Having to returned to cultivate the soils, and having pruned much of the dead-wood last year we are pleasantly surpised at how the vineyard is perking up again. It will be a few years of hard work before we can achieve everything we want, but so far: proper balanced pruning, ploughing, manure and very little irrigation are working wonders. In fact we should be able to dry-farm 100% this vintage.

Elaboración:

  • Naturally fermented with native yeasts
  • Conical oval shaped lagar type fermenter
  • Caps punched down by hand.
  • Lignified stems re-introduced after crush.
  • Yeasts native (we used wine from Cab Franc 2o14 vintage to a pie de cuba)
  • No temp control (besides opening closing windows) open tank, no nada
  • Pinch of sulfites after malolactic that did finish before winter began unlike the Carignans

Crianza:

  • Aged in barrels over two winters— barrels for this wine come from Almaviva after two uses: Sylvain, Berger & Fils &Nadalie

I also got to taste the 2014 Las Higueras Vineyard bottling (marked lot #62). This vineyard in the Caliboro zone of Maule has provided a very balanced and expressive Cabernet Franc, with complexity and nuances, fine tannins and good freshness. 3,642 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2015, having spent two winters in barrel.

Let's see if I can find names that can be reused from vintage to vintage, using the vineyard designation, like the case of their Cabernet Franc 2013 Las Higueras Vineyard from Maule. This was sourced from dry-farmed, head-pruned old Cabernet Franc vines planted on a terrace of alluvial soils near the Perquilauquen river. It matured in barrel over two winters. The Pirque Cabernet Franc is their first wine to sell out year after year, so they had to find more Cabernet Franc, and they finally got this, from two vineyards. It shows the mixture of varietal and place characteristics, plus the freshness from the year. It has more developed, earthier aromas. 3,371 bottles were filled in November 2014 from 11 barrels. This is lot #52.

Opaque ruby. Ripe cherry and dark berries on the deeply perfumed nose, complicated by hints of licorice, dark chocolate and pipe tobacco that build in the glass. Prövar Garages druvrena Las Higueras Cabernet Franc Lot 54 årgång 2013. Druvorna kommer från bush vines i regionen Maule. Ingen konstbevattning, manuell skörd, naturlig jäst och ingen temperaturkontroll i tankarna. Vinet lagrades 18 månader på gamla franska fat.

Tankarna går mot Bordeaux eller kanske snarare Bolgheri för här finns en generös och tät solvarm frukt parallellt med struktur och syra som stadgar upp. Inget kladd här inte. Noter av plommon, söt tobak, örter, en gnutta vått trä och ett uns vanilj. Även blyerts och svarta vinbär som får mig förbryllat att i sinnet (och på flaskan) söka efter en andel cabernet sauvignon, som alltså inte existerar i det här glaset. Toppas med silkiga men distinkta tanniner. Finurligt bygge med hög energi och bra balans mellan beståndsdelarna.

Gärna mer sånt här från Chile, håller ett öga både på producenten och movichile framöver!

Dry Farmed

“The special late-bottled 2014 Las Higueras Vineyard was kept for three years in barrel. The base wine is exactly the same as the regular bottling, but somehow nine barrels were left behind. This is quite classical, with more spice, cigar box and graphite, perhaps a little more marked by the élevage, in a López de Heredia way.” -LG

Características de los viñedos:

  • Terrace of alluvial soils above the Archibueno River
  • Having to returned to cultivate the soils, and having pruned much of the dead-wood last year we are pleasantly surpised at how the vineyard is perking up again. It will be a few years of hard work before we can achieve everything we want, but so far: proper balanced pruning, ploughing, manure and very little irrigation are working wonders. In fact we should be able to dry-farm 100% this vintage.

Elaboración:

  • Naturally fermented with native yeasts
  • Conical oval shaped lagar type fermenter
  • Caps punched down by hand.
  • Lignified stems re-introduced after crush.
  • Yeasts native (we used wine from Cab Franc 2o14 vintage to a pie de cuba)
  • No temp control (besides opening closing windows) open tank, no nada
  • Pinch of sulfites after malolactic that did finish before winter began unlike the Carignans

Crianza:

  • Aged in barrels over two winters— barrels for this wine come from Almaviva after two uses: Sylvain, Berger & Fils &Nadalie

All about this particular bottling :

  • After we held back barrels for a special project of magnums our client cancelled the Cab Franc on his order – thus we bottled it later after a third winter in barrel. We released it labelled: “late-bottled” as it has a stronger sense of barrel age than our wines normally do.
  • We have made Las Higueras Cab Franc since 2013. It was sourced from a corner of a larger 8 hectare vineyard of 110 year old Cab Franc in Maule. In this corner hectare most all of the cables and posts of the rows had mostly fallen down (the owners had used these bits and bobs to help better string up the rest of the vineyard) and, as we saw it, this little hectare had returned to its natural state in nature ie old bush head vines! Note : Two years ago we entered into an agreement to rent the whole enchilada in a long-term deal that has us managing all 8 hectares. We have brought in our dry-farming vignerons from Sauzal and Puico to help and have begun cultivating the vineyard the old way. The vineyard has responded well to what was a formidable pruning to recover and rebuild the old vines, but already we are seeing a re-birth.

This vineyard in the Caliboro zone of Maule has provided a very balanced and expressive Cabernet Franc, with complexity and nuances, fine tannins and good freshness. 3,642 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2015, having spent two winters in barrel.

Let's see if I can find names that can be reused from vintage to vintage, using the vineyard designation, like the case of their Cabernet Franc 2013 Las Higueras Vineyard from Maule. This was sourced from dry-farmed, head-pruned old Cabernet Franc vines planted on a terrace of alluvial soils near the Perquilauquen river. It matured in barrel over two winters. The Pirque Cabernet Franc is their first wine to sell out year after year, so they had to find more Cabernet Franc, and they finally got this, from two vineyards. It shows the mixture of varietal and place characteristics, plus the freshness from the year. It has more developed, earthier aromas. 3,371 bottles were filled in November 2014 from 11 barrels. This is lot #52.

Opaque ruby. Ripe cherry and dark berries on the deeply perfumed nose, complicated by hints of licorice, dark chocolate and pipe tobacco that build in the glass. Plush, expansive cherry and black currant flavors show very good depth and a refreshing touch of mint that emerges with air.
