Sauzal Vineyard
Carignan Garnacha Mataro
Maule Valley
2013 - Lot 45

"The nose is fresh and has tantalizing aromas of blueberries, violets, orange peel, raspberry leaf and aniseed with a touch of aromatic herbs that provide freshness. The palate is electric, with almost citric acidity, ultra-fine tannins and very good length. This is both rustic and elegant, wild and subtle. Wine does not show alcohol or wood. This is a superb, fresh, Mediterranean blend that shows what the Maule is capable of. Bravo!" - LG

Acidez titulable: 6,7 g/l
pH: 3,15
Residual Sugar: 1,34 g/l
Alcohol:  13,2 % vol

Blend:
Carignan - 4 barrels
Garnacha - 3 barrels
Mataró  - 1 barrel

2332 bottles filled

This wine was grown by a small farmer in the Maule: Nivaldo Morales. It was farmed by hand and horse with traditional methods of dry-farming 70+ year old vines with vines of Garnacha and Mataró in the field-blend.

It was fermented naturally in small tanks with open-tops. Caps were punched down by hand and pressing was strictly manual. The wine was aged in barrels over two winters— barrels of three or more uses.

This wine is a tribute to the resilience of the ploughmen farmers of the Maule who have been stewards of the vines of Sauzal since colonial times. The 45th wine we have produced since 2001 it is thus labelled Lot # 45

T a l k i n g  P o i n t s

  • Sauzal the Coastal Range of mountains (much older and slower to cool than the Andes) thus sub-soils have cracked granite beneath that allow roots to get deep into cracks)
  • Singular wine made from a small parcel with ancestral farming by hand and horse of the Secano Costero
  • Naturally fermented with native yeasts in open top fermenters using punch-down
  • Barrel-aged two winters in French Barrels (various cooperages, 2 + uses--  no new wood)
  • Vineyard part of GWCo’s Ploughmen Farmers Social Entrepreneurship Programme developed after the EarthQuake of 2010 and the winning of the Geoffrey Roberts Bursary.

Wine Advocate – Robert Parker , #222  Dec 2015
I visited an amazing vineyard from a grower called Nivaldo Morales with Derek Mossman, an old vineyard planted mostly with País and some Carignan, and some País vines were regrafted to Garnacha, Mataró (Monastrell) and Garnacha (Grenache). The 2013 Lot #45 Carignan Garnacha Mataró Field Blend is sourced from that Sauzal vineyard in the Maule Valley. A very similar wine is also sold in the United Kingdom as The Ploughmen. The nose is fresh and has tantalizing aromas of blueberries, violets, orange peel, raspberry leaf and aniseed with a touch of aromatic herbs that provide freshness. The palate is electric, with citric acidity, ultra-fine tannins and very good length. This is both rustic and elegant, wild and subtle. None of these wines show any alcohol or wood. This is a superb, fresh, Mediterranean blend that shows what the Maule is capable of. Bravo! Around 4,000 bottles were produced.  94 pts Drink 2015 - 2021

Wine Advocate note about Garage Wine Co.
I sat down to taste through an exciting collection of wines with Derek Mossman. Garage Wine Co produces wines from Maipo and Maule, and their trademark is wines with great freshness and acidity from some seven vineyards they work. 42,000 bottles per year of highly personal and full of character wines. I later met with Mossman again to walk some of the vineyards for where he sources grapes for some of his Maule cuvées and the work he's doing there to support the local 'huasos' and their vineyards is remarkable. The common thing that I've seen between Mossman, Cancino, Luyt, Parra and the other guys working in the south is respect -- for the people, the traditions and the places. These are wines of respect. An exciting project to keep in mind.

Wine Advcate – Robert Parker , #213  Jun 2014

The 2011 Lot #34 Carignan from the Maule Valley is produced from the fruit of dry-farmed, head-pruned old vines. It is bright ruby-colored with a serious nose mixing tree bark aromas, red and black fruit, licorice and subtle spices. The Carignan is blended with some Grenache and Mataró. The palate is fluid with good acidity and medium body – pure, fresh, delicious Mediterranean wine. This is a great, elegant blend. 93 pts Drink now-2019

Wine Advocate note about Garage Wine Co.
The Garage Wine Co. literally began in Derek Mossman’s garage with just eight barrels and is his project together with his wife Pilar Miranda and a friend, Doctor Alvaro Pena. Mossman, a native Canadian, is one of the founding members of MOVI, the association of independent winegrowers. They source Cabernet from Maipo and Carignan from Maule. One of the most impressive new names in Chile. I tasted their wines on different occasions, which meant I did not manage to get a good overview of all of them together, so my notes might seem a bit erratic, but such were the circumstances. I should make sure to sit down and taste and discuss the whole line-up with Mossman next time ‘round, as I found the wines intellectually enriching and want to understand them better.

The 2013 Portezuelo Vineyard Lot #48, as most of the Garage wines from the south, is a Cariñena field blend with some Cinsault. The nose shows some wild herbs, flowers, spices and something earthy. There is less acidity in this wine from Itata than in most of the other examples from Maule; the wine feels fleshy and juicy, with very fine tannins and some grip. More accessible for those that might not want citric acidity in their reds. This is the first Garage Wine release from Itata. Some 3,700 bottles produced.  92 pts Drink 2015 - 2021

Bagual Vineyard
Caliboro - Maule Valley
Garnacha Field-blend
2o13 - Lot 49

"Brilliant ruby-red. Potent, mineral-accented raspberry, cherry liqueur and potpourri aromas are complemented by a suave Asian spice note that builds in the glass. Seamless, penetrating and appealingly sweet, offering palate-staining red and blue fruit liqueur and floral pastille flavors and an exotic flourish of five-spice powder. Finishes sappy, smooth and extremely long, displaying harmonious tannins and a lingering suggestion of candied lavender" - JR

Blend:
Garnacha - 7 barrels
Syrah - 1 barrel

2699 bottles made

Acidez titulable: 6,07 g/l
pH: 3,27
Residual Sugar: 1,3 g/l
Alcohol:  14,5 % vol

This wine was grown by ploughmen farmers in the heart of the old Maule in Caliboro. It was farmed by hand and horse with traditional methods of dry-farming old vines with vines of Syrah in the blend.

It was fermented naturally in small tanks with open-tops. Caps were punched down by hand and pressing was strictly manual. The wine was aged in barrels over two winters— barrels of three or more uses.

This wine is a tribute to the resilience of the ploughmen farmers of the Maule who have been stewards of the vines of Caliboro since colonial times. The 49th wine we have produced since 2001 it is thus labelled Lot # 49

In a Nutshell:

  • single parcel in Caliboro next the Perquelauquén River called “Bagual”
  • ancestral farming by hand and horse, with traditional methods of the Secano
  • naturally fermented with native yeasts in open top fermenters using punch-down
  • Barrel-aged two winters in French Barrels (various cooperages 2 + uses--  no new wood)
  • Vineyard part of GWCo’s Ploughmen Farmers Social Entrepreneurship Programme developed after the EarthQuake of 2010 and the winning of the Geoffrey Roberts Bursary.

T a s t i n g   N o t e s

Spicy, floral and subtle, it has a dark ruby color, darker than most Garnachas, a little earthy and organic. The palate is sinewy, with nice acidity and the fine tannins of the Garnacha, perfectly integrated oak and a very tasty finish. — Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate # 222

“Full body with lots of earth and mushroom on the nose and palate. Round juicy character. Bright acidity. Chewy tannins. A blend of mainly garnacha and some Syrah. Drink or hold. ”
— James Suckling 2015

The 2013 Lot #49 Bagual Vineyard Garnacha Field Blend is composed of 7 barrels of Garnacha and one of Syrah. The grapes are harvested from the Bagual Vineyard in Caliboro, in the Maule, where they regrafted some old plants to Garnacha' in 2013 they bottled a varietal Garnacha for the first time. Spicy, floral and subtle, it has a dark ruby color, darker than most Garnachas, a little earthy and organic. The palate is sinewy, with nice acidity and the fine tannins of the Garnacha, perfectly integrated oak and a very tasty finish. Some 3,800 bottles produced.  91 pts Drink 2015 - 2021

The common thing that I've seen between Mossman, Cancino, Parra and the other guys working in the south is respect -- for the people, the traditions and the places. These are wines of respect. An exciting project to keep in mind.

Bagual Vineyard
Carignan Garnacha Mataró
Maule Valley
2014 - Lot 56

"Deep ruby. A wild, exotically perfumed bouquet evokes ripe dark berries, passion fruit and candied flowers, and a zesty mineral flourish builds in the glass. Appealingly sweet black raspberry, cherry and rose pastille flavors become livelier as the wine opens up. In a seamless, open-knit style, offering excellent finishing clarity and a long, gently tannic finish that echoes the floral note." - JR

Acidez titulable: 5,81 g/l
pH: 3,3
Residual Sugar: 2,12 g/l
Alcohol:  13,5 % vol

Blend: Carignan - 5 barrels, Garnacha - 4 barrels, Mataró  - 1 barrel

3021 bottles filled in Nov 2015

"Singular wine from small parcel of a historic Caliboro farm"

  • 1 of 9 wines we make from single parcels
  • Singular wine made from a small parcel with ancestral farming by hand and horse of the Secano Interior
  • Grower / partner:  Solar family
  • River´s edge, alluvial Bagual Vineyard is found on the banks of the Perquilauquen river. A river that (very unusual for Chile!) flows from the Coastal Mountains East towards the Andes passing through Caliboro bringing granitic silt with it. East of Caliboro it turns North and then West joining the Loncomilla and then the Maule River and on out to the Pacific.
  • The Perquilauquen is wide through this section like a narrow lake and this water body lends the fruit cooler conditions than neighbouring Melosal or Loncomilla.
  • Naturally fermented with native yeasts in open-top fermenters using punch-down technique
  • Barrel-aged over two winters in French Barrels (various cooperages, 2 + uses--  no new wood)
  • This wine was grown by ploughmen farmers in the Maule. It was farmed by hand and horse with traditional methods of dry-farming old vines with vines of Garnacha and Mataró in the field-blend.

Wine Making
It was fermented naturally in small tanks with open-tops. Caps were punched down by hand and pressing was strictly manual. The wine was aged in barrels over two winters— barrels of three or more uses.

Yeasts native (we add Bagual wine from previous vintage to a ‘pie de cuba’ primer)

No temp control (besides opening closing windows) open tank,
Pinch of sulphites after Malolactic that normally finishes a full 7 months after harvest with next summer´s heat. Another pinch before bottling.

This wine is a tribute to the resilience of the ploughmen farmers of the Maule who have been stewards of the vines of Caliboro since colonial times. The 56th wine we have produced since 2001 it is thus labelled Lot # 56

Bagual Vineyard Carignan/Garnacha/Mataró Field Blend 2014 Lot #56 – 94 Pts
This may come from what Derek Mossman calls a “scruffy vineyard”, but when it produces wines as good as this, who cares about aesthetics. It’s a classic Maule Field blend of Carignan, Garnacha and Mataró with lovely, wild herb and orange zest notes and fine, well-integrated tannins. 2o17-2o22

Bagual Vineyard Maule Valley Carignan, Garnacha & Mataró Field-blend 2014  - Lot # 56 – 94 Pts
This is a Carignan, Garnacha and Mataró field blend marked lot #56 where the Carignan is approximately 75 years old and the Garnacha and Mataró were grafted on roots of País that was over 150 years old. It's perfumed, floral, aromatic, intoxicating, nuanced and harmonious, with the elegance and subtleness of a white wine. It has good grip, with very fine tannins and great acidity. 1,694 bottles were filled in November 2015.

Bagual Vineyard Maule Valley Carignan, Garnacha & Mataró 2013  - Lot # 46 – 91 Pts
The 2013 Bagel Vineyard Lot #46 is a blend of Cariñena, Garnacha and Mataró (Monastrell or Mourvèdre) from the Bagel Vineyard, located in Caliboro in the Maule Valley. It's a vineyard that had old Cariñena and they regrafted some of the vines to Garnacha and Monastrell. They harvest and ferment the grapes separately from these alluvial soils from dry farmed, ungrafted vines (a constant in their wines). A little closed and serious, it slowly develops some aromas of paprika and beef blood, wild berries and something earthy. The palate is medium-bodied, with very fine acidity, fine tannins and very good length. Like all of heir wines, the wine spends two winters in the winery, as they believe it stabilizes and focuses the wines. This has very good harmony and stuffing to age in bottle. They produce a little more than 4,000 bottles of this wine. Drink 2015 – 2021 Luis Gutierrez

  • Vineyard part of GWCo’s Ploughmen Farmers Social Entrepreneurship Programme developed after the EarthQuake of 2010 and the winning of the Geoffrey Roberts Bursary.

Our Ploughmen Farmers 2013 (with green wax) sold in UK by Walker Wodehouse / Bibendum is the same wine from the same bottling.

A little closed and serious, it slowly develops some aromas of paprika and beef blood, wild berries and something earthy. The palate is medium-bodied, with very fine acidity, fine tannins and very good length. This has very good harmony and stuffing to age in bottle.
— Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate # 222

“Full body with lots of earth and mushroom on the nose and palate. Round juicy character. Bright acidity. Chewy tannins. A blend of mainly garnacha and some syrah. Drink or hold.

Wine Advocate – Robert Parker , #222  Dec 2015
91 pts Drink 2015 - 2021

Older Vintages - GWCo Carignans from Maule

Juicy, exuberant red fruit. Quality oak, though it is quite prominent at this early stage, and fresh, attractive acidity. Tender and well crafted. (RH) 14.1% Drink 2014-2019

GWCo Lot # 27 Carignan – 2010  - Same Sauzal Vineyard
The 2010 Carignan (91%) – Grenache (9%) sports an intriguing nose of exotic spices, black plum, black cherry, underbrush, and earthy minerals. This is followed by a plush, succulent, pleasure-bent wine that is more structured than its peers. Give it 5-6 years to reveal its full potential and drink it from 2016 to 2025 92 pts Parker

The 2008 Lot #17 Old Vine Carignan – Same Sauzal Vineyard
Field Blend includes unknown amounts of Malbec sourced from a 65-year-old parcel and aged in neutral oak. Purple in color with a captivating nose of exotic spices, incense, wild berries, and floral notes, in the glass it opens to reveal a complex, rich, layered wine packed into a medium- bodied frame. Give it 5-6 years to reveal its full potential and drink it from 2016 to 2023. 92 pts Parker

GWCo Lot # 17 Carignan Old-bush vines vintage - 2008

This Carignan-based blend is savoury and slightly funky with complex notes of clove spice, red fruits and balsamic vinegar. Yet another great wine from Maule. Tim Atkin UK  - 91 points

GWCo Lot # 17 Carignan Old-bush vines vintage - 2008

Bright ruby. Intense, spice-accented aromas of cherry, redcurrant and violet, with smoke and mineral topnotes. Juicy and precise on the palate, offering energetic red fruit flavors that take on weight with air. Finishes smoky, spicy and very long, with slow-building tannins and resonating florality. 91 Josh Raynolds - Steve Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar
